How to Use the BTS Skytrain and MRT in Bangkok: A Beginner's Guide

Bangkok’s public transportation system is convenient, but it can be a bit confusing for first-time visitors. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are the fastest ways to get around the city. This guide will help you get started quickly.


1. BTS Skytrain

Basic Information

  • Lines: There are mainly two lines:

    • Sukhumvit Line: Runs north–south, connecting Mo Chit → Bearing / Kheha.

    • Silom Line: Runs east–west, connecting Bang Wa → National Stadium.

  • Operating Hours: Around 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM

  • Fares: Distance-based, ranging from 16–59 THB per trip.

How to Buy Tickets

  1. Ticket Machines:

    • Supports Thai and English.

    • Accepts coins and banknotes (check denominations).

  2. Rabbit Card (Stored-Value Card):

    • Rechargeable and convenient for multiple rides.

    • Can also be used for purchases at certain stores.

  3. Single-Trip Token:

    • Ideal for short-term visitors.

    • A transparent token is used; insert it into the turnstile when entering.

How to Ride

  1. Purchase a ticket at the Ticket Counter or Ticket Machine.

  2. Enter through the turnstile by scanning your card or inserting the token.

  3. Check the train line and direction for your destination.

  4. Upon arrival, exit through the turnstile. Tokens are returned automatically.


2. MRT Subway

Basic Information

  • Lines:

    • Blue Line: Circular line connecting major attractions.

    • Purple Line: Connects northern suburbs.

  • Operating Hours: Around 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM

  • Fares: Single-trip tickets cost 16–42 THB, depending on distance.

How to Buy Tickets

  1. Ticket Machines:

    • English interface available.

    • Accepts banknotes and coins.

  2. Stored-Value Card (MRT Card):

    • Convenient for multiple trips.

    • Rechargeable at ticket counters.

How to Ride

  1. Select your destination and purchase a single-trip ticket or use a stored-value card.

  2. Enter through the turnstile by scanning your card or inserting the token.

  3. Watch the station display inside the train.

  4. Exit at your destination station.


3. Important Notes

  • Peak Hours: 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM; trains can be crowded.

  • Safety Rules: Eating, drinking, smoking, and standing beyond the platform line are prohibited.

  • Luggage and Pets: Small carry-on luggage is allowed; check rules for larger items.

4. Tips

  • If you plan to ride multiple times, getting a BTS Rabbit Card or MRT stored-value card is most convenient.
