How to Use the BKK Airport Rail Link with Luggage

Is it Right for YOU?

  • YES, if: You are traveling solo or as a couple with manageable luggage (e.g., one medium suitcase and a backpack per person). You're staying near an ARL or BTS station (e.g., Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam areas).

  • NO, if: You are a family with young children or have multiple large, heavy suitcases. The walk to your final hotel from the station might be long and difficult.

Step-by-Step Guide with Luggage

1. Finding the Station at BKK Airport

  • After you clear customs and collect your bags, follow the clear signs that say "Airport Rail Link".

  • The station is located on the Basement (B) Level of the airport terminal. It's a straightforward, indoor walk.

2. Buying a Ticket

  • Head to the ticket counters or automated machines.

  • Select your destination station. For most tourists, the final stop, Phaya Thai, is the best choice as it connects directly to the BTS Skytrain.

  • The fare is very cheap (around 45 THB to Phaya Thai).

  • Pro Tip: If you have large suitcases, use the ticket counter. The staff can assist you, and you won't have to navigate the machines with all your bags.

3. On the Platform: Waiting for the Train

  • You want the City Line (the one that stops at all stations). The Express Line is not running as of 2024.

  • Trains run approximately every 15-20 minutes.

  • Look for the designated area on the platform marked with wheelchair symbols. This is where the train cars with more space for luggage will stop.

4. Boarding the Train with Luggage

  • Be Quick but Careful: The train doors do not stay open for long.

  • Luggage Areas: Once inside, you will see:

    • Overhead racks: Suitable for backpacks and small carry-ons.

    • Designated luggage areas at the ends of each car: These are open spaces where you can park larger suitcases. There are no luggage straps or locks, so you must keep a close eye on your bags.

  • Best Spot to Stand/Sit: Try to stand or sit near your luggage. This ensures you can see it at all times and are ready to exit quickly.

5. During the Ride

  • The journey to Phaya Thai takes about 30 minutes.

  • The train can get crowded during rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM). If you're traveling at these times, be prepared for a tight squeeze.

  • Follow the station announcements and the map inside the train to know when your stop is approaching.

6. Getting Off and Transferring

  • This is the most challenging part with luggage.

  • At Phaya Thai Station: You will need to get your luggage off the train and navigate to the BTS Skytrain transfer.

  • Elevators are available, but they can be slow. Look for the elevator signs.

  • Escalators are common, but you must be confident managing your suitcase on them. Stand facing forward, place your suitcase on the step in front of you, and hold on firmly.

  • Stairs: Avoid them if you have heavy bags. If you must use stairs, look for wider service staircases.

Luggage-Friendly Stations for Transfers

Your experience will depend heavily on which station you transfer at.

  • Phaya Thai Station (BTS Transfer): This is a direct, indoor, and elevator-accessible transfer. It's the most luggage-friendly major transfer point.

  • Makkasan Station (MRT Transfer at Phetchaburi): This transfer involves a long, elevated walkway and stairs/escalators. It is not recommended for travelers with a lot of luggage.

Crucial Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • Pack Light: The fewer and lighter your bags, the easier this will be.

  • Consolidate Bags: Try to have one suitcase per person that you can easily wheel and lift.

  • Use Backpacks: A backpack is far easier to manage than a shoulder bag or multiple shopping bags.

  • Avoid Rush Hour: If you arrive at the airport between 7-9 AM or 4-7 PM, seriously consider a taxi or Grab instead. The trains and stations will be packed.

  • Know Your Hotel's Proximity: Check a map! If your hotel is more than a 5-10 minute walk from the final BTS station, a taxi the entire way will be much less stressful.

Alternatives if the ARL Seems Too Difficult

If you have a lot of luggage, these are better options:

  1. Metered Taxi: The most convenient door-to-door option. Go to the official taxi stand on Level 1.

  2. Grab/Bolt: Similar convenience with a fixed price. Set your pickup location correctly at the airport.

In summary: The Airport Rail Link is excellent for travelers with light, manageable luggage who are staying near a BTS station. Be prepared for a bit of lifting and navigating at the stations. If you have more than you can comfortably carry for 10-15 minutes, the extra cost of a taxi is worth the convenience.
